Around the House: Inspired by Pegboards

Monday, March 31, 2014

Who says that peg boards have to be relegated to retail stores, kitchens and garages? They've been showing up all over the place lately - couple that with my love of polka-dots and I'm crushing pretty hard. I'm planning to do a little update in my boys' bedroom soon and thought I'd share my pegboard inspiration with y'all...

Are you inspired yet? How would you dress up your pegboard? Or would you even go there?

Happy Monday homies. Let's do this! xo

Seeing Stars

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

As the littles grow, I make daily discoveries about them. My latest? If a craft involves glow-in-the-dark and stickers... they're in. In my box of goodies from Craft Project Ideas, I received glow-in-the-dark foam stickers and some neon fuzzy pom-poms. I thought little banners of glowing stars above the boys beds would be cute and once I shared my idea the boys were stoked. My oldest even added the neon pom-poms. The banner making got so out of control that they each made three banners for above their beds...

(please excuse the extremely blurry and poor quality images - something was up with my camera's settings.)
I'm pretty sure I've found a winning combination for crafting with my boys: easy, quick, bright colors, neon and tape. Later that night, after our bedtime stories, we turned off all the lights for a little glow fun. Honestly, the stars didn't have a super bright glow but they were glowing none the less and they continue to shine, bringing joy to my boys each night. Success. Thank you Craft Project Ideas! This one was a win! xo

Around the House: In The Bedroom

Monday, February 25, 2013

After spending a little over a week in my bedroom with the flu, I realized something... my bedroom is thrifty. I think the only thing I purchased new was a vase, mattress and a clock and that makes me happy. Is that strange? I love love that every piece has a story. Our mid-century modern furniture was purchased at an estate sale. Jumbo lamp and macrame pieces - gifted by my MIL who is also a thrift addict (much to my delight). Mirror - estate sale. Magnolia branches - free...
(art has been added to this little wall and I'm still looking for a wall sconce that won't break the bank)

Our side tables were both estate sale finds as well as the bedding linens, except for the bedspread. It happens to be a painters drop cloth that I shortened on the sides a bit. In the future I hope to take a fabric marker to it and add some stripes along the lines of piping. I will test it out with washable markers first before moving onto permanent. The pillow was made out of a vintage scarf. And that headboard was made by my FIL over 10 years ago for my husbands old studio. I think I may need to paint that center panel. But what color? Black? Navy? Speaking of navy, this bedroom used to be that lovely shade of blue but the hubs just wasn't sold. We repainted a couple of months ago and absolutely love the deep grey. It is super cozy now.

What's your favorite thing about your bedroom? xo

Around the House: Moody Blues

Blue. Blue. Blue. Not that I had a bad weekend, it was actually great. We got loads done. (Thank you community group of wonderful angels.) I just can't get my navy blue bedroom walls out of my head. They are dead sexy. Let me say it again, Dead. Sexy. Even the hubs has come around - saying, and I quote, "You did a good job on the walls babe. Nice." Uh - huh. That friends is a major win. Now I am once again on the carpet hunt. I have a feeling it will be a while before I  get to purchase anything for this room, but a girl can dream and scheme. Right?

Hello pretty, creamy neutrals that make me dream of all things cozy. Pretty sure my capiz light hanging will have to go in our bedroom for a nice warm glow. I'm gonna love mixing things around and re-appropriating pieces. This. Is. Getting. Exciting.

How about you? What makes you dream of all things cozy? xo

Around the House: Scratchin' the Itch

Monday, April 16, 2012

Good Mornin'. Can you believe it's Monday again? So soon? Ugh. Over the weekend,  I busied my sweet husband with some honey-dos. New paint selections, carpet selection for the playroom and rewiring/hanging our awesome garbage find above the bed. I'm kinda lovin' it. And looking at the pic above makes me want to paint our bedroom walls a dark grey or navy - but I won't. Not yet anyway.

I can't stand to look at the same decor over and over again. I often get the itch to change things up a bit. Most recently, the bedroom. A few weeks ago I scored an old doily Pinaboard at the thrift store for $3.00. It was hiding in a corner and the red frame caught my eye. I decided to pair it with the vintage bathroom mirror that ended up being too big...  I think the end result is a bit more bohemian-modern.

The hubs isn't sold on the sign above the bed. I think he's kinda grossed out about it being old and "dirty" (even through I scrubbed the tar out of that thing) and above our bed. What do you think? xo

Around the House: Budget Friendly Window Dressing

Monday, May 16, 2011

When natural sunlight filter into my bedroom in the morning, everything seems peaceful and good. I don't know why, but I just love waking up to lovely lighting in our bedroom. One thing I don't like is our original 1950's windows. They're ugly and dirty. After 4 years of looking past the gunk, I decided to give our bedroom windows a little facelift that would still let the light filter in.

Ikea has these amazing and super affordable curtains that have just the right touch of grey and the perfect weight to keep one's privacy and let in the light. However, after spending $25.00 on the curtains, I just couldn't see myself dropping more cash on curtain rods. Enter - bulk trash rummages. Luckily, I didn't have to go too far, I found some awesome branches in my neighbors trash pile. By simply trimming of the leaves and cutting them down to size, I got the perfect curtain rods.

With 4 black cup hooks from Home Depot (already in my tool box) and my favorite tool, the electric drill, I had my curtain hung in 10 minutes!
vinyl coated cup hooks (mine are in black)

The pics are a bit blurry (more of a crafter than I am photographer) but hopefully you can see how easily the branches just drop into the hooks. It's so easy and cheap - my fave! xo

Around the House: My Design Identity Crisis

Monday, April 4, 2011

Happy Monday! I had every intention of showing you where those lovely cakeplates from last week made their grand appearance in my house, but I can not seem to find a key piece that I am looking for to make the space complete. Stay tuned...

Until then, I thought I'd share with you my design identity crisis. While I love all things modern, I have a love affair with all things vintage and colorful.  Here's a peek at what I'm talkin' about.

Kitchen:

Living Room:

Bedroom:

Kids Room:
modern

Both are equally beautiful, no? I try my darndest to find a happy medium of both within my home. Hope you enjoyed the eye-candy. xo

Around the House: Layers

Monday, January 24, 2011

One of the things I love most about super cold weather is getting to bundle up in layers. This applies not only to clothing but bedding as well. It's one of the few times of year that the hubs puts up with a major dose of girliness.

starting with some thrifted floral sheets

and pillow cases...

my favorite vintage floral sheet (for the moment)

top off with some colorful quilts... (doesn't the yellow look divine with that pink?)

end result - layered goodness that makes me want to snuggle in bed all day!

Does your winter bed get anything special that makes it super cozy for you and super hard to get out of bed, especially on a Monday? xo

Around the House: Bedroom Envy

Monday, January 17, 2011

Do you ever have a love/hate relationship with your decor?  Example: I love my bedroom but, I kinda wanna change things up - without spending any money. Tough job that I'm not quite sure I'm ready to take on just yet. Here's a look at some bedrooms that really get my heart beating fast!

sighhh... ( i love, love that dark, rich wall)

There are many, many more, but I have shown you a lot of them already. No need to repeat myself - it's Monday and I'm sure you're busy!  Have a lovely week. xo
