Arrgh...

Thursday, September 19, 2013

Shiver me timbers! It's National Talk Like A Pirate Day. In honor of this great holiday I will be forced to wear stripes (possibly a patch), say things like "walk the plank" and "swab the deck Matey" and possibly make some piratey crafts with my boys while munching on Pirate's Booty. Possibly.
bath time might be a repeat of this...
and we might make little pirate drawings like these from MerMag

Quick joke I'll be forced to tell:  "Have you heard there's a new pirate movie coming out?..... Yeah, it's rated Arrrhh." Tell me Matey - arggh you going to celebrate? xo

Lunch Lady...

Tuesday, September 3, 2013

Well it took me two years, but I've finally tackled lunches.  Yes, thank you. Applauding is extremely welcome. Throughout Kinder and 1st grade the lunch scenario looked one of two ways: I would either stumble into the kitchen at 6:30 am completely groggy to make my morning coffee and lunches OR I would be in a mad rush to shove something healthy-ish into my littles' lunch boxes before we rushed out the door. Either way I was pretty much a hot mess.

This year, I decided to make lunches for the entire week on Sundays. I keep them packaged up in a bin in the fridge so everything stays fresh...

Bam! 10 minutes and 6-8 lunches depending on the week's schedule. That my friends is epic progress for this lunch lady/mommy. (If you have any suggestions for packaging that will keep my sandwiches fresh for days, I'd greatly appreciate your advice. We are currently saving the plastic baggies and washing them for reuse.)

How do you manage daily lunches? xo

Seeing Stars

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

As the littles grow, I make daily discoveries about them. My latest? If a craft involves glow-in-the-dark and stickers... they're in. In my box of goodies from Craft Project Ideas, I received glow-in-the-dark foam stickers and some neon fuzzy pom-poms. I thought little banners of glowing stars above the boys beds would be cute and once I shared my idea the boys were stoked. My oldest even added the neon pom-poms. The banner making got so out of control that they each made three banners for above their beds...

(please excuse the extremely blurry and poor quality images - something was up with my camera's settings.)
I'm pretty sure I've found a winning combination for crafting with my boys: easy, quick, bright colors, neon and tape. Later that night, after our bedtime stories, we turned off all the lights for a little glow fun. Honestly, the stars didn't have a super bright glow but they were glowing none the less and they continue to shine, bringing joy to my boys each night. Success. Thank you Craft Project Ideas! This one was a win! xo

*craft project ideas provided the stickers and pom-poms for this craft.

Guilt? No Thanks.

It's about this time every year that I wonder why in the world so many people are "RIP"ing Summer. Not me. Not. One. Bit. It is crazy, wicked, stupid hot in Texas come August. Going outside causes every single pore to ooze sweat. This is apparently the sweat that calls the attention of every mosquito in Texas. The pools feel more like hot tubs. If that's not enough, every single activity has been crossed off the summer to do list.

And so we find ourselves at the end of Summer and the blessed holiday known as Back to School. That's right. I said, "holiday." You might not consider it as such, but when I have three days to myself to focus on my hobbies, my To Do lists and my reading lists, that indeed counts as a holiday. Sure, there are the moms that wish Summer could last forever, but I am not one of them. I love my littles and I am a firm believer that absence makes the heart grow fond. I will NOT have any guilt over the unshed tear on the first day of school. I will instead rejoice in the new journey of life with a 2nd grader and a Pre-K nugget.

So to all you moms out there feeling guilty for the excitement that precedes and continues through the new school year, know that you are not alone. If you don't believe me, check out these posts from Jen Hatmaker and Momastery. There is no need to feel guilty or compare yourself to the sorrowful mommy at the school drop-off. Parenting is a hard job, especially when you are on duty 24-7 for three full months. Give yourself a break and remember that the hours between 3pm - 8pm will not be filled with eating bon-bons. It's called grace - let's all dive in.

Tell me, are you ringing in the new school year or donning black for your time of mourning? xo

The Business of Making Beds

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

If left to their own devices, my boys bedroom would look like this everyday. They see this as "clean". And I can not, in good conscience, do this to their future roommates and wives. As their mom, it is my job to teach them. And I think there are several schools of thought on this.

1. Chores are just a part of growing up. It teaches them responsibility.
2. I can't do it all. They live here, they need to help out.
3. It teaches them to be good stewards of the their things and not take them for granted (read also entitled).

I happen to fall into the camp of "all of the above" are correct. And, I think we, as parents, are missing out on a huge opportunity to teach and grow our children's character if we see bed making and tidy rooms simply as chores. Yes, chores are important. Please don't misunderstand me. I think chores around the house for littles shows them that they are a part of something bigger. A team - where everyone plays an important part. They are needed to make the team machine run smoothly. Because it's true, I can't do it all. None of us can. And I also believe it's an opportunity to teach them about material things and how to be a good steward of all God has given us. I don't want my littles growing up entitled and I definitely don't want them thinking that there is a bed making fairy that swoops in daily to make their beds and change their sheets every two weeks. What a tragedy that would be - for them and me.
Now before I go tooting any horns, you should all know that my kids, until recently, haven't made their beds daily and have thrown fits when having to do so.  This summer I just realized that I was doing them a disservice by not expecting this of them. Even though they are only 5 and 8, they CAN do this and I want them to have confidence in themselves and their abilities. So recently I set some ground rules (after consulting friends) that they will not play wii, watch tv, go outside to play or any other fun activities until their beds are made. Yes, days are still had with pajama jammy jams on the wii and silliness at every turn, but getting the day off to a good start with the accomplishment of bed making is good for everyone. (Yes, I practice what I preach. My bed is made mostly before coffee.)
And no, their bed making is NOT perfect. Far from it. It looks nothing like the bottom bunk above. Sadly, it doesn't even look as good as the tidy beds below (close though). I have determined to have peace about semi-made beds with sheets that aren't straight and don't cover the mattress fully. "Perfection" will come with time and practice. For now I am just loving the confidence boost they're getting each day.
How about you?  What's your bed-making camp? Oh, and how do you accomplish the task with your littles? I'm always looking for advice and growth in the mommyhood arena! xo

Around the House: Hosting a 12 and Under Dinner Party

Monday, July 15, 2013

I'm not quiet sure why I haven't thought of it before... Why is it that our littles' dinner tables get so neglected when the parents meet for dinner? I go all out for the adults - flowers, candles, place-settings and the like. The littles usually get plastic plates and chicken nuggets or hot dogs. And then they're asked to keep themselves entertained while the grown ups chat. I finally put an end to the insanity the other night when hosting some dear friends with 3 boys. That meant 5 boys at the dinner table and a whole lot of energy.

I put out the basics and then provided a little entertainment with a crayon centerpiece, construction paper placemats and two tins full of legos. They could draw whatever they wanted and then with the legos I provided a challenge - set up teams and then see who can build something cool using all the lego pieces in the tin...
It was so easy. I don't know why I had never thought of it before. The adults enjoyed their meals and a nice conversation while the littles played and giggled. Yes, it helped that there were older boys keeping my littles enamored with their coolness; but I also think going the extra mile made everyone feel special. And that's what our children and friends are... special. A gift from the Lord.

What's your favorite table centerpiece? xo

Ships Ahoy!

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

My boys love to play in the tub. And honestly, I love it too. They are in a confined space, playing and getting clean all at the same time. What's not to love? So when I find a quick and easy craft that calls for tub time, I'm all in - especially on hot summer days.  I recently found a quick sailboat DIY on Mama, Papa, Bubba that I knew my boys would love, if modified a bit (no sparkly sails in this house).

Materials:
corks
rubberbands
toothpicks
fabric scraps
stamps
stamp pad
By opting for stamps (to indicate their pirate tribe) instead of sparkles, this DIY thrilled my boys and entertained them for a good hour and a half. I picked up this stamp set at the thrift store for $8.00 knowing that Ford's Warrior theme would be a huge hit with my Ninja Warrior loving boys. I was right. They picked their rubberband colors, their warrior symbol/stamp, and their corks for this easy craft. Once the boats were assembled, they stuck the toothpicks in their corks. Together we cut the fabric scraps (aka sails), stamped them and put the sails onto the toothpicks. Ready to brave the seas...
We added Playmobil figures to increase the fun and longevity in the tub. Eventually my youngest said, "I don't want a sailboat anymore. I want a motorboat." and off went the sails. Ahhh, there is some imagination in that sweet head of his and not just a burning desire to play Wii 24-7. Praise the Lord.

They stayed in that tub for a little over an hour, came out sparkly clean and a bit pruned. Entertainment, imagination, leadership (my oldest bathed himself and his brother) and cleanliness. Now that is a seriously awesome craft that cost next to nothing. Woot woot.

Have you done any awesome crafts lately that you care to share? xo

Weekly Challenge: Summer Quiet Time Boxes

Friday, May 31, 2013

It's coming. Summer. Long days. Short nights. And super hot Texas days. If I plan my days right, we'll be out and about in the mornings and mid-afternoons with quiet time falling in the scorching heat of the day. If I know my boys at all, I know there will be zero napping. For them summer means party time! All the time. My best defenses for summer sanity is daily quiet-time boxes. It took me a while to prep, but after just one day I am gonna be so glad I did this.

I laid out a ton of craft objects, toys and the like and got to work...
Once I had everything laid out, I organized my items into rows of five items for each category. Categories consist of the following:

games - i'm not completely crazy. this has got to be fun.
pen & paper products - to encourage drawing, writing and imagination
brain power - because it might be the only time their little brains are stimulated each day.
crafts - a girl can dream right?
pom-pom races powered by their own breath
if they're gonna draw it should be in 3-D to make it double fun
sewing 101
journals (some pages have pre-marked pages to get them started. i can't wait to see what they create)
brain power activities that require various skills to be mastered
daily boxes include an activity from each category - they get to choose what they do that hour and a half
At the end of each day they will have had some down time and I can read, nap or whatever. The possibilities are endless and this gets me a little excited.

How are you getting ready for the dog days of Summer? xo

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Summer Boredom Busters

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

Summer gives way to all kinds of adventures. One of my least favorite is a day filled with the following chant, "Mom... I'm bored." I've mentioned my affection for the "bored jar." But if I'm honest with myself, I know that won't be enough to keep my littles busy in between playdates and other activities. Here are a few fun ideas using household items to keep your littles entertained...
balloon tennis (source unknown)

Yup, that should cover about a week and a half. Right? Oh Lord, I had better get ready! What kind of summer artillery do you have up your sleeve? xo
