Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Junk Drawer DIYs

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Junk Drawers. Life's little keepers of miscellaneous odds and ends. We've all got 'em.  From nuts and bolts to spare change, paper clips and rope - they're either in the junk drawer waiting for use or headed to the landfill. Here's a couple of ideas to turn your "junk" into treasures.

DIY #1:
I saw this first DIY on another blog and though I've tried, I can't seem to locate it again! Holla - if you know the source. Thanks.

Supplies:
spare nuts
paint
paint brush
Krylon clear gloss spray paint
necklace
select nuts for use

paint nuts (give 'em 2-3 coats) ps - yes, I'm aware that's a styrofoam plate. they're left over from a party years ago and rather than toss them, I'm using them where I can.

once the paint is dry, spray a clear finish on both sides (do this outside and with a dust/painting mask)

once they're dry, string onto necklace in an arrangement that suits your fancy and enjoy!

DIY #2 -

Supplies:
2 different colored ropes
1 fabric scrap
1 clipboard
select ropes and fabric and trim to desired length leaving one much longer than the others

gather the 3 strands with one longer than the other 2 and tie a knot

place knot under clip and braid your three strands

tie another knot at the end of your braid leaving one strand longer again

snip ends of ropes and fabric to create clean ends

tie long ends at back of neck and enjoy! I have to admit, I'm kind of loving this one for a splash of color with gray tees and jeans.

It's all about using what you have on hand. You don't have to spend a fortune to have fun accessories and you don't have to add to the landfills either!

What's a favorite DIY you've done using found objects? xo

  1. Awesome ideas! I don't think I ever would have thought of that. I think the most I do is reuse paper and ribbons and whatever little do dads for wrapping and such.

  2. no ones gonna judge your styro plate...we all have them lurking in the backs of our pantries. Your necklace is awesome, if feel a project coming on! Thanks for the inspiration

  3. Love the braided necklace. Should have known you made it. Kept meaning to compliment it on Wednesday night. I need a more in depth lesson on that one. I don't have "scraps" laying around like you do. :)
