A Little Privacy Please

Friday, February 26, 2010

It seems to me that much like carpet, curtains did sort of a disappearing act in the 90's. Everyone started using blinds. Wooden blinds, mini blinds, custom fit blinds...you name it. Blinds were to windows what the little black dress is to cocktail hour. The question is, "why?" Are they more efficient? Do they provide more privacy? They definitely aren't more pretty, with the exception of the honeycomb, energy efficient top down bottom up variety. Funny thing is, they are in almost every room of my house. Yikes! I've taken them down where I can (we have really old windows that aren't so pretty) and covered some with curtains.

Here's the problem, I never know what to do with curtains. Do I make them floor to ceiling, cover the window only, use roman shades?  What do I do? I love them so. Really, I do. So far, I've only made two sets of curtains, both for my boys' rooms, as seen above. I'm not 100% satisfied with them, but they do make the rooms dark and that was the main purpose.

The fabric choices out there are endless and curtains really can bring a room to life. Not only that, but you don't have to use "fabric." You can make them from old sheets, bedspreads, tea towels, pillow cases. Oh my gosh, my head is spinning as I type and don't even get me started on tie-backs. (I used an Urban Outfitters' bedspread and galvanized hooks from Ikea in my oldest's room.)

Now the really cool part. They are super easy to make - really!  Can you sew a straight line? That's pretty much all you need to know how to do. Wait, it gets even better. Brett Bara of Manhattan Craft Room did a full tutorial on Design*Sponge yesterday. Check it out!  What are you waiting for? The weekend's here and you could have beautiful windows in a matter of hours! Until next week. xo

  1. Love the use of other items for drapes! I have honey-comb shades and dress them up with matching crocheted pieces across the top on a suspension rod. Suspension rods are a God-send!
