Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Window Shutters

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

You don't have to be a dumpster diver to find window shutters for free. Trust me. Just drive through any old neighborhood during bulk trash week and your sure to find them waiting to be hauled off to the city dump. Considering all the cool things you can do with shutters, I'm pretty sure it's a tragedy for so many to be tossed aside.

Right now you might be thinking, "yeah, those are cute, but Country Modern is so not my style." Well, The Tortoise and the Hare came up with a pretty great take that has a more Modern spin. And they even show you how to make it yourself!

Cute right? Check out their blog...it's pretty cute too! That's all for now. I'm off to sew more for the Etsy shop. Sew. Sew. Sew. Do you have any RRR ideas that you'd like to share? I'd love to hear from you - I'm kind of running out of ideas here peeps. xo

  2. Funny, I'm looking for some shutters right now as wall decoration. I don't think they always come across as modern country. Depends what else is in the room!

  5. Using window shutters as window covers really got my attention. My bathroom just got a remodel, and we did a modern approach to it. We felt that it needed contrast, so we decided to use our old shutter windows. We just painted it a bit to make it look like new. It totally worked! The color of the shutters gives the bathroom a homely feel. It stands out, but at the same time, it complements with the whole design. I just love squeezing out my creative juices when I’m renovating. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

  6. Herb’s correct! Window shutters are very recyclable. Simply painting it with another color will transform the shutters. It can be adjusted to serve different purposes – such as mail holders and headboards. Window shutters can be great additions to your home through your creativity!

  7. I’m a sucker for Country Modern, so these shutter ideas are just perfect for me. =) But for those who into country-styling, there are still a lot of DIY ideas that can turn these old shutters into their desired look. Pinterest is actually a great place to get inspirations and tips on how to recreate them. =)

    Regards,
    Katie

  8. A window treatment provides privacy, lets the sun in (or not) and helps to keep the cold weather out. And it does all of this while dressing up your windows and making your rooms look formal and elegant, modern or romantic – or while making a whimsical or bold design statement.
