Around the House: Inspired by Pegboards

Monday, March 31, 2014

Who says that peg boards have to be relegated to retail stores, kitchens and garages? They've been showing up all over the place lately - couple that with my love of polka-dots and I'm crushing pretty hard. I'm planning to do a little update in my boys' bedroom soon and thought I'd share my pegboard inspiration with y'all...

Are you inspired yet? How would you dress up your pegboard? Or would you even go there?

Happy Monday homies. Let's do this! xo

The Business of Making Beds

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

If left to their own devices, my boys bedroom would look like this everyday. They see this as "clean". And I can not, in good conscience, do this to their future roommates and wives. As their mom, it is my job to teach them. And I think there are several schools of thought on this.

1. Chores are just a part of growing up. It teaches them responsibility.
2. I can't do it all. They live here, they need to help out.
3. It teaches them to be good stewards of the their things and not take them for granted (read also entitled).

I happen to fall into the camp of "all of the above" are correct. And, I think we, as parents, are missing out on a huge opportunity to teach and grow our children's character if we see bed making and tidy rooms simply as chores. Yes, chores are important. Please don't misunderstand me. I think chores around the house for littles shows them that they are a part of something bigger. A team - where everyone plays an important part. They are needed to make the team machine run smoothly. Because it's true, I can't do it all. None of us can. And I also believe it's an opportunity to teach them about material things and how to be a good steward of all God has given us. I don't want my littles growing up entitled and I definitely don't want them thinking that there is a bed making fairy that swoops in daily to make their beds and change their sheets every two weeks. What a tragedy that would be - for them and me.
Now before I go tooting any horns, you should all know that my kids, until recently, haven't made their beds daily and have thrown fits when having to do so.  This summer I just realized that I was doing them a disservice by not expecting this of them. Even though they are only 5 and 8, they CAN do this and I want them to have confidence in themselves and their abilities. So recently I set some ground rules (after consulting friends) that they will not play wii, watch tv, go outside to play or any other fun activities until their beds are made. Yes, days are still had with pajama jammy jams on the wii and silliness at every turn, but getting the day off to a good start with the accomplishment of bed making is good for everyone. (Yes, I practice what I preach. My bed is made mostly before coffee.)
And no, their bed making is NOT perfect. Far from it. It looks nothing like the bottom bunk above. Sadly, it doesn't even look as good as the tidy beds below (close though). I have determined to have peace about semi-made beds with sheets that aren't straight and don't cover the mattress fully. "Perfection" will come with time and practice. For now I am just loving the confidence boost they're getting each day.
How about you?  What's your bed-making camp? Oh, and how do you accomplish the task with your littles? I'm always looking for advice and growth in the mommyhood arena! xo

Around the House: Dream Nursery

Monday, April 29, 2013

What do teepees, tiny toes and gold triangles have in common? One very lucky little boy named Ryder. My sweet friend Allison, of Design from A to V, is expecting her first baby in just two short weeks. I love how excited new mommies get in preparation of meeting their little! A fave is the nesting portion. The nursery gets all the attention, even if the rest of the house is full of milk crates and bean bags. I'm not sayin' that's the case at the Vieger house, quite the opposite if you'll recall from her home tour, in fact, this designer went all out for her sweet boy.
This is a room I could sit in for hours! And once Ryder is here... I just might. Sorry Allison. i know I said I'd be coming to hang out with you, but Ryder and I will be chillin' here while I force you to go nap! Just a few short days until we meet this gift from the Lord.

Did you have a serious nesting phase when you were pregnant? xo

Around the House: Cleaning and De-Stinkifying

Monday, January 16, 2012

If you're a mom of boys, I think you'll agree with me... they're stinky! I'm not sure why, but there's a certain odor that tends to linger at their doorway. Maybe it's something they do intentionally to keep Moms and all girls at bay. Personally, I'd prefer a sign that says, "Boys Only." Last week I finally reached my breaking point and while the boys were at school I did a thorough cleaning and finally got around to hanging my favorite $15.00 Round Top score.

She's orange, lopsided and all banged up, but she's a jewel for sure. And now my big can see his trophies at all times.

I added a few new estate sale books to their shelves too. Happy. They make me happy - the boys, the books and the odor-free room.  Now that makes for one happy Monday. Hope your weekend was fabu! xo

Around the House: My Design Identity Crisis

Monday, April 4, 2011

Happy Monday! I had every intention of showing you where those lovely cakeplates from last week made their grand appearance in my house, but I can not seem to find a key piece that I am looking for to make the space complete. Stay tuned...

Until then, I thought I'd share with you my design identity crisis. While I love all things modern, I have a love affair with all things vintage and colorful.  Here's a peek at what I'm talkin' about.

Kitchen:

Living Room:

Bedroom:

Kids Room:
modern

Both are equally beautiful, no? I try my darndest to find a happy medium of both within my home. Hope you enjoyed the eye-candy. xo

Around the House: Serenity NOW!

Monday, March 28, 2011

Above is a snapshot of my oldest's drawer on any given day. He doesn't know how to fold all that well (if at all) and he changes his outfit about 5-10 times a day. This is enough to drive a Momma crazy. We have worked and worked on the folding and picking clothes up off the floor, he's better at the latter. But over the weekend, I decided to take matters into my own hands. My approach? Hangers. At his level... in an organized closet.

(Ikea and the Dollar Store help my sanity in BIG ways.)

Man, looking at this photo it appears as though he barely has any clothes at all. I should note that most of his clothes were in the dryer when this photo was snapped. Now I know it's not much to look at, but we're getting there. Once some sight words and art work are hung on the back wall, it will be better. Heck, it will be better if he can just hang his shirts up. That would be so awesome - as well as a time saver and laundry reduction. Oh gosh, I get excited just thinking about it.  And yes, I think he's up for the hanging challenge. PS. He thinks he's up for it too! xo

Blog for Digs - My Childhood Bedroom Was...

Wednesday, December 22, 2010

Today I have the honor of participating in Claudia Clobes' brainchild, Blog for Digs. Claudia has united tons of bloggers with Dwell with Dignity to raise awareness and funds as they "help families escape poverty and homelessness through design." Quite the worthy cause, I do believe. Yesterday, Pink Black Grey shared her childhood bedroom and today I get to do the same!

Let me set the mood: white walls, blue carpet and lots of kittens. Add the following items and you have one sweet girlie room. It was a lot like this but human size. And my wardrobe was nowhere near that cool. That's the one thing my room was missing.
French Provincial Furniture (which I'm pretty sure was standard in every girls' room in the 70's) I thought I was so cool dressing up with all my makeup (and lots of it) at this vanity. My aunts still swear I could put on makeup better than any of them back then. Perhaps I missed my calling.

Throw a little Holly Hobbie bedspread into the mix along with lots of ruffles.

Upon entering my bedroom you would always find my besties: My Friend Mandy and Ginny. These girls were my homies. Poor Mandy had dreadlocks I loved her so much! (Side note, my sweet Mother-in-law gave me both of these dolls when I married my hubs! I still have them.)

If you'd like to check out other bloggers' childhood bedrooms, go here for a schedule. What was your childhood bedroom like? Did you have a favorite item? xo

Around the House: Black

Monday, September 6, 2010

Halloween being just around the corner has absolutely zero to do with how much I am loving black right now. Call me crazy, but black seems so fresh and clean.

It's moody. It's clean. It's crisp. And I must confess, I'm noticing it goes really nicely with natural woods (kind of like my wood floors) Hmmm. I might be getting a painting itch and I haven't even finished the furniture in the garage yet! Are there any colors you are dying for right now? Happy Labor Day! Pools are closed. Mornings are cool again. Summer is gone and I couldn't be happier. You? xo
